| Deceased Individuals The MVA is electronically notified by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) when a death certificate for a Maryland resident has been filed. The MVA runs a program to match the deceased person's information with Maryland MVA records. If an exact match is found, the MVA updates the person's record with the code identifying the person as deceased in order to prevent identity fraud. What should I do with the Maryland driver's license or an MVA identification card that belonged to the deceased person? Return the license or identification card as soon as possible either in person to an MVA full service branch office or by mail to the Administrative Adjudication Division (AAD). Be sure to include the individual's date of death. This is a safety measure that helps the MVA prevent identity fraud. How can I sell a vehicle that belonged to the deceased person? See information available about inheriting a vehicle, or refer to the infoMVA process description about transferring ownership of a vehicle owned by a deceased person, entitled Titling - Deceased Owner.
